I originally wrote it in a more moderate tempo and as I added to it, I just kept increasing the speed until it sounded good. I started with the base line. Picked the first sound that kind of did something for me and thought it belonged in the bass register but it was too buzzy for just any old straight bass line so I made it dance a bit. Since it was kinda techno, that's the mode I put into it. The drums were next. I started with my own drum pattern. . . (Oh cool! They're playing "I love you, goodby" on the radio right now! Gotta dig that Cajun Dolby! You do realize that that song is where we got our band name "Dirty Datsun Driving Club", if that's what were going with.) . . .and was fiddling with some of the new features in my new sequencer software when I accidentally filled my rhythm track with one of the programs built in rhythms. After I listened to it, I thought it sounded pretty good, so I left it. My rhythms are usually more jazzy, or trip-hop or whatever. Then I just layered, playing with different sounds. I was checking to see what sort of percussion my computer had built into it, came across the bell and decided it would make a nice break between the segments. >Have you been on the pendolino? No, the furthest I've been out of the states was Vancouver BC when I was just a toddler. The train ride sounds beautiful! It was sheer coincidence that you had been riding the train recently and it just kinda struck a chord in me as a good theme since I already had a train in my head from writing the song. >Anyway,..this could be an interesting challenge,...let me know more! I hope this was enough of what you were looking for. Are you a musician? In particular, a MIDI musician? If so, please retrieve the MIDI file from my web page and lets see what you can do with it. It's at www.idcomm.com/personal/jamac This goes for any Alloy member. Let's see what we can come up with. >juna-terveisia (Translation please? You may work larger if you wish, or do a 3-D project... if that is the case, the work can be photographed onto slide film, the slide scanned into the computer, and the image reproduced to an appropriate size for the book. You may simply send the slide to Dave and I and we can do all the scanning - but since you know exactly what your piece looks like & we don't (ie color adjustments etc) you might prefer to do it yourself and send us the accurate reproduction. The color department at a nearby Kinko's may be able to handle the scanning end of things, but insist on a result you are happy with. If the artwork is 10x14 or smaller, it can be included as an original piece in the Art Book. Paintings can be done on prepared paper, preferably acid-free (a good paper is Reives BFK, which comes in large sheets at the art supply store; prepare it at home by applying a layer of gesso to either side & allow to dry completely before working. You can prepare the whole sheet, and then cut into desired sizes for your work) I plan to have ONE original book (the gift itself which will be shipped off to Thomas) from which I will make a number of papreback copies during assembly for anyone who would like one. About seven people from Alloy have signed on so far, and I hope to hear from A LOT more contributors soon for this one-of-a- kind hardcover volume. Don't be shy!
