Tilson" Subject: Alloy: Michael Hedges 1954-1997 Greetings friends, I learned yesterday that guitar innovator Michael Hedges died in a = solo car crash last friday, November 28, 1997. He was 43. The = accident occurred on a particularly treacherous road at night in the = rain and was partially attributed to less than perfect tires in = addition to the slippery surface conditions. = News of the event left me in tears. Michael Hedges was and shall = remain an inspiration to me as a musician and guitarist. A talented = composer and performance artist; he was known for his singular = technique of playing the guitar by both fretting and = picking/strumming with either hand simultaneously. Michael said of = this (and I paraphrase heavily), `When studying in the conservatory I = needed a compositional tool that gave me greater range of tones and = timbres than the guitar. Rather than switch, I learned new ways to = create sound with my instrument of choice.' This was rather a bold understatement, and typical of his = self-effacing spirit. Hedges was clearly a genius of innovation in = guitar technique, and additionally possessed a profound ability with = and understanding of musical dynamics. His work defied = categorization. A common yet incorrect observation from first time = listeners is, "This is more than one guitar.", yet Hedges recorded = 90% of his groundbreaking releases, _Breakfast in the Field_ (1981) = and _Arial Boundaries_ (1984) as a solo artist performing live with = no overdubbing. These two acclaimed releases played a major role in = the success of Windham Hill Records. I have had the pleasure of attending many performances by this = uniquely gifted, riveting performer, and have talked with him on = occasion; once at length. I was blessed to have observed him = throughout his career. The memories I have are good and the gifts he = left behind will always be with me. = I am *really* trying to remember that, = but all I can selfishly think right now is that I have lost a reason to l= ive. Michael also left behind two sons, aged 10 and 12 years, from a = previous marriage. A trust fund has been set up to benefit Hedges' = sons. Contributions may be made to the Children of Michael Hedges, = c/o Bank of America, 228 North Main Street, Fort Bragg, CA, 95437, = USA. Interestingly, there is no more than one degree of separation between = Thomas Dolby and Michael Hedges: Joni Mitchell, with whom both artist = have worked. I apologize for hogging the bandwidth with this, but I thought there = might be a Listie or two who'd give a damn. Check your tires today, ok? = Sadly, Stephen ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Dec 97 22:18:55 +1000 From: Paul Baily Subject: Re: Alloy: The Big Music Exchange (proposed) >OK, I had this great idea last night - it might be crazy, but see what you >think. (The background for all of the colors on this project will be black, in case other people here think the same way about colors as I do) Black and grey, I can definitely work with. My own colors for this project are yet to be decided - intense cobalt blue, pale pink, yellow... They present unussual images in songs that cause a basic reaction in their audience. I think you're looking for logic where it doesn't have a home. In fact TMBG really is sort of continueally pointing out that logic often doesn't exist where we think it does. So you are not really "not getting" anything. A few of them are kind of interesting, and some of them are really -quite- funny. (See Dr Banana's interpretation of "Dead", for example..)
