Let me reiterate to everyone: YOU add to Alloy. You may not think it, you may post every day or only once in a blue moon to the list, but regardless of frequency, you make it a better place to be. I know, good intent doesn't make email quotas, employer tracked usage logs, or time limits go away, so if it helps any here are a couple of practical things you can do if you're feeling the pinch that may help: 1. Try switching to the digest version of the list. ___________________________________________________ What this means is that you're still very much a part of the action, but instead of receiving 20 messages a day from Alloy, you receive only ONE message per day that contains that day's Alloy messages. At the top you get a concise list of the subjects and authors for each message which makes it easy to use your mail progam's Find command to quickly jump to the messages you want to see. It's quicker to download and takes up far less lines in your inbox list and even a little less disk space. If you want to send or reply you still just post to the normal alloy address. Incidentally, you'll find that most lists out there (well the good ones anyway ;-) offer digest versions so you may want to check this option out with other lists you're subscribed to. Digests are a very handy way of cutting down on your message count, inbox clutter, and can save you a surprising amount of time. Switching between the live and digest versions of the list is dead easy, and you can switch as often as you like. Here's how: To switch from Alloy to Alloy-digest, send a message to majordomo@smoe.org with the following in the body (not the subject) of the message: subscribe alloy-digest your@address.here unsubscribe alloy your@address.here To switch from Alloy-digest to Alloy, again, send a message to majordomo@smoe.org with this in the body of the message: unsubscribe alloy-digest your@address.here subscribe alloy your@address.here NOTE: The Alloy server takes you quite literally, so in that unsubscribe line you need to use the same address you first subscribed under, e.g. paulb@mailhost.thehub.com.au isn't recognised as the same as paulb@thehub.com.au. As always, if in doubt, please do get in touch with me at paulb@thehub.com.au and I'll take care of it for you. 2. If your email program supports it, try using mail filters or rules to manage how your Alloy messages are received. ___________________________________________________________________________ If you've not used them before, a mail rule is a way of automating how your email program handles incoming messages. How it works is this: let's say you can't stand reading messages from me because I talk too much. All you do is set up a rule that says 'delete all mail from paulb@thehub.com.au with a subject that starts with "Alloy:"' another example, lets say you can't stand a thread on say spam tins and it's been going for a few days; just set up a rule that says something like 'delete all mail with the subject containing "Alloy:" and "spam tins"'. WARNING: The problem with mail rules (and computers et al) is that they do exactly what you tell them to, so you need to be really careful how you set up these kinds of rules or you may risk losing mail you didn't want to lose. A couple of pointers that may help you here: * Mail coming direct to you from Alloy doesn't always have alloy as the To: address. Some people's email programs seriously muff that part of the address. The good news is no matter what, every Alloy message that reaches you always has a reply-to address of alloy@smoe.org - this applies whether you're on the live or digest version. * It's safer to use the addresses rather than the subject to apply rules. If you set a rule say filtering a thread called say 'Alloy: Cool Listening' (so you set a trigger on "Alloy: Cool L") you may also never get the message a friend of yours sends with the subject 'Alloy: Cool List!' telling you about a great new list [s]he's just discovered. ;-) * If you usually run short on time, but get a free hour here and there, try setting up a rule that simply files all Alloy messages in a separate folder that way your Inbox stays uncluttered, but you can still happily rummage through our musings when you get some time to yourself. Hope this helps, and as always, don't hesitate to contact me if you've any further questions, stay well, Paul. ________________________________________________________________________ Paul Baily paulb@thehub.com.au Consulting SE/IT Mercenary http://www.thehub.com.au/~paulb Brisbane Australia and you may ask yourself "Well, how did I get here?" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Nov 1997 08:20:02 -0700 From: "Keith Stansell" Subject: Re: Alloy: Now Playing: >...and while Stevie's (me) feeling petulant . . . >Keith wrote: > > Pulp Culture - Lissu > > I must say, this is the sexiest version of any Dolby song I've > ever heard. > > > Lissu - so sultry, such an great voice. >Hunh.
