[Sorry for the delay in forwarding this to the list Robin, BigAl kicked it this way because there were two copies of the story. Apols if the formatting is bad folks, my fault not Robin's -PB] Here's another AOL news piece all about you-know-who! In a message dated 10/27/97 9:47:54 AM, AOL News wrote: << SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 27, 1997--RandomNoise, Inc., the emerging leader in Java web authoring tools, announced today RandomNoise Coda 2.0 will support Rich Music format (RMF), via Headspace's Beatnik Plug-in. RandomNoise is the latest in a list of Internet companies to support RMF, including Sun Microsystems, Netscape, and Network Computer Inc. Thanks to a comprehensive set of Java-callable functions, the Beatnik Plug-In and RMF music files can respond to Coda 2.0 intelligently for music playback on events such as a "mouse click" or "mouse over". Coda can also easily trigger individual notes, sampled voices, or sound effects, start or stop music, change tempo, volume, pitch, or mix. This revolutionary flexibility with Coda allows the authoring of direct musical interactions within web pages, instead of the current use of Internet audio as a passive, playback-only experience. In return, users of the Headspace Beatnik Editor will now have an easy way to develop interactive music sites in a non-programming environment. "We are delighted with this relationship. RMF music has become increasingly popular with low-level HTML web developers, but easy integration with Coda opens up the world of interactive sound authoring to a far broader range of users," says Thomas Dolby Robertson, CEO of Headspace, Inc. "This is a very significant advancement for the Web development community," said Fred Krueger, President of RandomNoise. "For the first time, designers and web publishers have a single solution for creating interactive Java applets that fully take advantage of the latest sound technology." RandomNoise Coda Coda is the first Java authoring tool for creating interactive Java web applications without programming. Coda is based entirely on Sun Microsystems Java programming language. Because of Java's object oriented, cross platform and dynamic nature, the language is fast becoming the de facto standard for publishing interactive content on the Web. Beatnik and Rich Music Format (RMF) The Beatnik Plug-In, Beatnik Editor and software support MIDI and other audio file formats, then optimizes them for efficient delivery over the Internet via RMF (Rich Music Format) files for use on the web. RMF is a cross-platform file format that enables real-time, high quality music at modest bandwidths. It combines the small file size of MIDI with the ability to download and play sampled sounds, bringing speech and sound effects to Internet audio. Headspace's revolutionary sound technology will be included in the core of Java 1.2, which is available on beta form at Sun's web site. About Headspace Headspace was established in 1993 by multimedia entrepreneur Mary Coller and musician/composer Thomas Dolby Robertson. From its offices in Silicon Valley, Headspace produces software products and musical content for the Web. Headspace's audio engine has been licensed to an expanding family of strategic partners, including Sun Microsystems/JavaSoft, WebTV and Be, Inc. Headspace musical content has been licensed to many customers, including Netscape Communications, WebTV and Universal Studios On Line. By coupling advanced engineering skills with first-class musical talent, Headspace is dedicated to realizing new possibilities for interactive music and audio within multimedia and on the Internet. About RandomNoise Headquartered in San Francisco, RandomNoise is a leading innovator of Java authoring tools for building interactive Java web applications without programming. RandomNoise's award-winning Coda 1.0 for Windows, Macintosh, and the Internet is now available to business, education, and government customers worldwide. Coda 2.0 built in Java for designing web based interactive Java applications will ship this winter. Hi all! I'm late in saying so, but I got my b-day tape the other day, and my first reaction was also something alot like "Wow!!!" (And also my second, third, fourth, etc reaction as I listened to it over and over and over and...) Three more cheers for Crackers and Ian for organizing everything. Alloids certainly are a talented bunch! I'll bet Thomas loved it. Like TMDR's albums, the only thing wrong with AAMBdaycake is that it's not near long enough.. ;-) And now my little comments for everyone.. Electrix - Niice.. those sound clips really do well here, especially the interview. Crackers - What a sound, man! Good for a grin, a laugh, and a little wild dancing. Your voice does indeed work great with this piece. Erik - Oooh, simple, but not without complexity, true to the original and pretty unique. I'll just say I liked it. And your voice isn't bad at all! -I- think it's actually rather endearing (though maybe that's not what you were going for.. ah, well) The instrumental part is fantastic! Lissu - So when's your first album?! Seriously, no matter what the 'corporate world' thinks of your music, I hope Thomas and his Beatnik will make it possible for you to get your music out into the world... if it's all of this quality, -I'd- listen for sure. (I've never heard AAMB, but these songs make me want to rush out and get a copy to see what the originals are like right away..) Ian - Again I haven't heard the original, but wow, pretty catchy tune.. you sing it like you mean it. You did all that yourself?! It's been stuck in my head all day. :-) Monya - Beautiful.. I share everyone's regret at not being able to hear you well here. Europa & Miles - You two make beautiful music together. ;-) I'm definitely impressed. The_Copse - does it again! A very unique interpretation, I get some good mental imagry of this one. Airplanes in thunderstorms, for starters... so you're -sure- it's really "Lincoln"? ;-) Lee - Keewl... and intense, this is one to rattle the windows with. I've always had a thing for techno. All right, I'll stop now... fortunately I don't think anyone's ego around here is overly inflatable, but I shouldn't push my luck, eh? ;-) Besides, I have to go listen to the tape again..... -- E(lipse ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Oct 1997 13:16:29 -0500 From: Tim Dunn <113203.2623@compuserve.com> Subject: Re: Alloy: Birthday Cake!! - the aftertaste............................ I find that the bands that really worked well for me where the bands that sort of sprang up spontainiously from a bunch of friends who'd get together to jam every now and then. And the worst ones are the "Hi, I'm Johnny Hotshot, and I'm going to be a star and I need you, you, and you to play for me." I even had one guy call me up once and say, "Hi, I want to put together a band just like 'The Commitments' and I'd like to know if you'd want to play keyboards for me." I said, "I guess you didn't pay much attention to the movie because 'The Commitments' were the band from hell and the last type of group I'd want to be in." As for why I record on my own... well... 1) When I'm the only one in the group, it doesn't matter if everyone in the band sleeps with my wife. 2) All the more beer for me! 3) When I have sex with myself, it doesn't create any uncomfortable tension in the band. 4) I can do everything on my own time. 5) It gets done the way I want it to get done. 6) My drum machine will never be arrested for statutory rape. 7) Nobody else gets to hear my embarrassing mistakes. 8) Don't have to pay anyone for anything. 9) Very hard to find the right combination of talent and personality. I'd love to have a drummer right now, but since my old friend Dave Gould moved to P.E.I., I just can't find anyone to take his place. He was without a doubt the most talented drummer I've ever heard in my life and he was one heck of a person too. He just doesn't have the dreams of big fame and fortune and is much happier living on a wee island in the middle of nowhere with a quiet simple life. Which is a pitty for the world because if this guy wanted the brass ring the whole world would know who he is. Since he's moved away I've just been too bummed out to even look for another musical partner. 10) No messy legal disputes. And that's the lonely story of my professional life.
