Anderson-TMDR linkage Many many many years ago, I latched onto a copy of Stereo Review and even though I didn't realize it at the time, two of my favorite artists had their latest releases reviewed in that issue. I know for sure that the Laurie Anderson release was Mister Heartbreak, but I do not remember which one of Thomas' albums was critiqued. While reading both reviews, I thought to myself "what a bunch of crap. why can't they review something good, like Judas Priest?". Needless to say, I've come quite a ways from my overly hormonal adolescence...well, musically speaking at least. :) Now, both of these quirky people have a permanent place in my music collection, and I can't imagine how things would be had I not given them a listen. Laurie is just too funny for anyone NOT to listen to. I could cite some examples but that would come off as a "guess you had to be there" joke. ****** Charles E. Apparently, the actual writers of "Happy Birthday" are two sisters in Michigan or somewhere, and they still do own the copyright. It was first obtained in the 1930's or something similar. The report I saw (kinda tongue-in-cheek of course) recommended that we all forward 5 cents to ASCAP or whatever every time we sing it! So, just for the record -- we all should indeed associate "Happy Birthday" with an artist. :-) - -- Elaine Linstruth Palmdale, CA (USA) On Mon, 6 Oct 1997, electrix wrote: > Do you associate "Happy Birthday" with an artist? Living an easy drive from Ian's house probably means I got my copy of "Aliens Ate My Birthday Cake" before anyone else (with the exception of Ian and, of course, Mr. Dolby). It's neat getting to hear the musical talents of all the people on the list. Let me go through the songs with you all now. 1) The Birthday Greetings - The music should have been ducked more under the voice overs some of the greetings are a little hard to hear. Loved the music Lissu. I kinda expected Barry White to start singing at the begining. 2/11) Windpower (Electrix) - I agree with Ian, I like your vocal version better, your voice is a bit more interesting, although I like the sample work in the version where Dino sings and the Thomas Dolby interview is a really nice touch. 3) Nuvogue (Crackers) - You suck, man! I mean if suck got sucked you'd be the one who sucked the one who sucked suck, man. And to answer your questions Ian, no I don't have a manager and yes I'd like to make a million bucks... but I wouldn't have to sleep with you or anything would I? (The rest of you will know what I'm talking about when you read Ian's comments) 4) Weightless (Erik Habbinga) - The guitar work on this is amazing! If anyone doubted wether an "unplugged" version of "The Golden Age Of Wireless" could be accomplished, they just have to listen to the guitar on this one. Your vocals remind me a bit of the guy from "Canned Heat". 5) Pulp Culture (Lissu) - Very cool, very minimalist, love your voice. Slightly creepy edge to this interpretation, love it! 6) My Brain Is Like A Sieve (Ian Gifford) - I didn't know "The Crash Test Dummies" were doing a track on this tribute album. Love that trombone, what's the matter, didn't have the budget for a comb and wax paper? ;) 7) Cruel (Monya De) - Eh? Is this thing on? It's a pitty the recording came out so bad. Judging by your voice on the birthday greeting we all missed out on a big treat. 8) Therapy/Growth (Stephen M. Tilson/Mary A. Brown) - Really cool. Although I felt like I was put on hold by a government agency at first (it's the french part that does that for me). 9) Flying North (The Copse) - A slower, swingier, and darker interpretation of Dolby's song. Loved the dynamics. But I've told you a million times, it's "Knickers steaming in the chilly air of the morning." ;) 10) Big Bang Backwards (Lee Jackson) - Neat. So how many BPM was that one? What gear are we hearing here? This song reminds me of a TV theme song, but I can't for the life of me think of what the show is. It's like the way "One Of Our Submarines" always makes me think of "The Six Million Dollar Man". "We can rebuild him, we have the technology... faster... stronger... better..." So now that the dust has settled and Thomas has his present and we're all about to get ours, let's hear some production stories and what not from the contributors. What gear did you use, how'd you record, what parts gave you trouble, what tricks did you use, and how did you arrive at your interpretation of the song you chose to cover for the album? I, too, had no idea what they were singing until I saw it written down somewhere or other, but it certainly wasn't with the subtitles on while watching TOTP, which I hardly ever do these days, as it's such a load of old cobblers. It sounds like fun, I might try it. I think the last time I watched TOTP, Altern-8 were performing something which I think was called 'Tonight's the night,' the lyrics of which consisted of 'Come with me, Tonight's the night.' 'Come with me, Tonight's the night.' 'Come with me, Tonight's the night.' 'Come with me, Tonight's the night.' 'Come with me, Tonight's the night.' 'Come with me, Tonight's the night.' 'Come with me, Tonight's the night.' Sung out of tune by some bimbo who should have stayed in the audience. No, I tell a lie, the last time I saw it was probably when those Blue Boy balm pots who sang 'Remember me,' you know, the one that goes 'Remember me, I'm the one who had your baby, ah. 'Remember me, I'm the one who had your baby, ah.' 'Remember me, I'm the one who had your baby, ah.' Ding dinga ding ding ding ding ding Dinga ding dinga ding ding ding.
