It made me smile at work to see it :) And I swear I'm not kidding, and we weren't seeing things: on the night before Thomas' birthday, when Dave took me out for ice cream as consolation for not getting into Keith's party, we both saw a UFO - the description of the event is as follows: We saw one bright, red-tinged white light, about the brightness of Jupiter on a clear night, drifting quickly and silently, high across the southern sky from east to west. We couldn't see any structure around it but figured it must be a helicopter, though it wasn't moving like one or making any noise (seeming to drift gently, as if following an air current, but fairly quickly); after a while a second equally bright light came on, nestled in close to the first, identical in size and color. After another 30 seconds, a third light came on, forming a tight little triangle of identical bright lights. It continued floating along its path, then suddenly the whole thing disappeared - and reappeared again much further toward the west. It then seemed to gain very quickly in altitude, the light from it growing rapidly smaller, and then it just wasn't there anymore. We were freaked. It was moving off toward the southwest, the approx. direction of Thomas' house from Boston. COINCIDENCE?? What are some opinions of what this might have been? I doubt it was MIR. Hope Thomas and crew had some extra cake & ice cream handy. Oooh, er missus, deja vu again. Hang on a mo, it isn't deja vu, I DID do this last year so I can amend the old copy and send it out again. So, here it is, everything you never wanted to know about Slarvibarglhee and probably a lot more besides. I'm 43 at the moment, married with one wife and two kids (a son,18 and a daughter, 16) a dog, a cat and a variable number of cold water fish. I work for the Government Office for the North West (GONW), in Manchester (UK) as IT Administrator, Helpdesk Operator, IT trainer, PC/printer technician/installer (very basic) and office manager, looking after around 300 IT users (in what used to be the North West Regional Office of the Department of Employment until we merged with the Regional Offices of the Departments of Trade and Industry, Environment, and Transport about three years ago and became GONW). I've ALWAYS worked for "the department" having taken a temporary job at Openshaw Unemployment Benefit Office when I left school at 18, and never left. Since then, I've worked in employment offices, training admin offices, as an accounts supervisor, a training officer, an open learning development officer, and have been doing my current job since 1990. This is the best job I've ever had, though the training job came a close second. Promotion prospects are now poor in the civil service so I have no great ambition to get into senior management. My son's into all kinds of music, but mainly metal, and is learning rock guitar. My daughter prefers pop and is heavily into amateur dramatics. My wife likes Simply Red and we often used to see Mick Hucknall shopping in Safeways or riding his mountain bike, as he has a house about a mile from us. John Squire (ex Stone Roses, now guitarist with The Sea Horses) used to live next door, and we used to look after his house and feed his cats when he and his girlfriend were away, and I even had to jump start his Merc one cold winter morning. He once cleaned our kitchen after causing it to be filled with plaster dust when he was doing alterations to HIS kitchen. I like many types of music, being and ex-hippie and flower child......, well "ex" is only as far as my appearance is concerned, inside I'm still the beautiful person I was at 18, or at least *I* think I am. I like old "progressive" rock music and lots of other stuff as well (Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis, John Martyn, Steve Hackett, Brand X, TMDR [of course], CSN&Y, Crazy Horse, Neil Young, The Incredible String Band, Procul Harum, Clannad, Camel, Led Zeppelin, Fairport Convention, Roxy Music, The Beatles, Bruce Hornsby, King Crimson, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Scritti Politti, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Sting, Tears For Fears, Judy Tzuke, and many, many more). I like to read Tolkien, Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchet, Spike Milligan and lots of other sc-fi, fantasy and humour. I like to watch Frasier, Friends, X Files, Monty Python, Billy Connolly, American Gothic, Due South, Northern Exposure, Cracker, Prime Suspect (these last two are filmed in my area, so my wife and I like to play "Spot the Location" when they're on), almost ANY old black and white films, in fact almost ANY films at all, though I do like sci-fi best of all, even crappy old films with terribly amateurish special effects, not very frightening (e.g. Hammer) horror films, and science/new technology documentaries. I used to be a keen cyclist and I still cycle to work every day, despite having a seven year old Datsun, though it's known as a Nissan over here, and in fact only started driving out of necessity when I was 27 in order to ferry the family around. I used to swim a lot, and did karate for a few years, till the injuries became too much and I gave it up. I'd like to delve into astronomy, but the seeing isn't too good in Manchester, and I don't have the spare cash for a decent telescope, so it'll have to wait. I started playing acoustic guitar when I was 10, played bass in a band briefly when I was 17, but couldn't tell you the name of a single chord that I can play. I don't play much these days, much to my regret, but there never seems to be enough time to do everything I want to. (This is a lame excuse, but it's the best I can manage.) I think the internet is the most fun place I've found in recent years, and I've made contact with people all over the world as a result of finding people with similar interests, like you good people. I should explore it more, but time is against me again. I used to log in to the FES chat Room everyday until its demise, and I miss it terribly. I met my best net buddies in there and I can't wait for the new improved, whiter-than-white version with no artificial additives or colourings. Manchester is not a bad place to live, though like most cities, it has it's slum areas, drug and crime problems and it's share of homelessness. We have some excellent music venues and sports facilities, but the centre of the city was severely damaged by an IRA bomb in June last year, and it'll probably be several years before it's fully rebuilt. I live about 3 miles out of the city centre, in a village suburb called Chorlton-cum-Hardy, which I think is a quaint and very "English" name, as is Didsbury, which is another Manchester suburb where I lived until I was 18. We're about an hour's drive from the North Sea coast, most notably Blackpool and Liverpool, and about 90 minutes from the Lake District, which is where Wordsworth wrote about the "host of golden daffodils" and where an aunt of mine lives, and about 4 hours drive from London. Manchester is the home town of those surly Gallagher brothers (Oasis) as well as the original home of Graham Nash and the rest of the Hollies, Peter Noone, New Order (originally Joy Division), The Smiths, and a lot of other talented people I can't remember the names of. From my office window on the 21st floor I can see the Pennines in the distance, and from the other side of the building Granada TV studios where they record Coronation Street, probably Manchester's biggest and most enduring international export, as well as Cracker and Prime Suspect. I have little interest in politics, but think that the world is now such a complicated place that NO political parties will ever sort it out, but I just wish they'd all stop sniping at each other and work together for the common good. I try to do my bit for the environment by recycling whenever I can, and by cycling to work even when it's raining cats and dogs, but I'd like to do more. I'm worried by the increased competitiveness in business, which causes downsizing, streamlining, redundancies, insecurity and exceptional stress. I'm worried by the lack of jobs for school leavers, the general rate of unemployment, and all kinds of "-ist" discrimination (racist, sexit, ageist, etc.). I worry about how we're going to pay for all the additional retired people now that we're living longer, the queues for medical treatment and the lack of affordable housing. This has turned into much more of a biography than I'd intended, but never mind, it'll give you more of an insight into the life of Slarvi. TTFN Slarvibarglhee P.S. Slarvibarglhee, my net handle, in case you hadn't realised, is just Bill Hargreaves rearranged. I didn't think of it myself. A Scottish colleague of mine a few years ago had the habit of rearranging the letters of people's names to make amusing alternatives. The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy was popular at the time and he turned me into something not entirely dissimilar to Slartibartfast. When I first found my way into the FES I couldn't think of a handle to use, so used Slarvi and have stuck with it ever since. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Oct 97 23:49:11 +1000 From: Paul Baily Subject: Re: Alloy: The Party Room Is Ready! >In the meantime, time to calm my nerves,...half an hour ago a moose jumped >out on us on the motorway on the way to work,....first time I ever felt like >I needed a stiff whiskey at 9am. Some of the temporal mechanics on the TR2 project were just testing a new Tap Room component they're developing. It's designed to work around the time difference problem. That way you can just name a time to meet someone on the room and it all happens relative to your local timezone but still in realtime. Nifty eh? It is way beyond my comprehension and yet I was spellbound by TD's delivery. It provoked my further interest. I only wish I understood more but there is even time for this ol' codger. God willing. Brown" Subject: Alloy: Odds and ends Hi fellow Dolby lovers, I'll try not to make this post too terribly long but there were a few = comments I wanted to make before I separately send my account of the = lecture and reception last week, a version of what is lovingly known = on the Crowded House list as "the Hair and Pants Report". So = speaking of the CH list, here's an excerpt from someone who posted = today: > Well, I am a new subscriber, and I wanted to say hello to = > everyone. I finished reading all my "new subscriber" information, = > though, and I'm now convinced that my slightest (and inevitable) = > misstep will bring the wrath down upon me. Oh, well. Into = > temptation, to coin a phrase... [snip] As I've said, I'm new to = > this. I wanted to introduce myself, though. I'd love to hear from = > any of you. And, above all else, I'll try my damndest not to = > break any of the rules that have been laid out for me. There's = > nothing worse than some idiot like me, mucking everything up for = > everyone... My first thought was, "Now *this* is the sort of person who would fit = in well with the Alloy list." My second was, while it's distasteful = for me to think about, that maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea for a = little something to be added to the Welcome to Alloy message to = indicate what sort of behavior is considered unacceptable. = To Robyn, I extend a hearty "Welcome back!" Whatcha think of this as = a way to keep the Roby(i)ns straight - RobYn won the TommY Award (if = memory serves) and RobIN crafts violINs? :-) = To Lem, I say I have really been enjoying your posts of late. = Nothing like a scientist with a sense of humor, even if I do say so = myself! Slarvi, I am somewhat miffed that I'm not Algie's only flirt on the = Net! Lissu, I'm sending you very warm thoughts and Stephen reported to me = that it was 86 F today. Our door is always open and the only "moose" = you'll find here is chocolate! Now, a little teaser about the 9th...I strongly encourage our modest = and lovely Ms Monya De to tell about her audience with our hero. = Turns out he was really excited about meeting *her*! Both she and = TMDR are incredibly photogenic. In the batch of photos Stephen took = that night, they look gorgeous in every one while Stephen and I kept = saying, "Nope, I look awful in this one!" We did manage to find one = in which all of us Alloids look decent so we'd like to impose upon = someone with a webpage to allow us to post the image. We also have a = really nice one of Brian and Beth along with the two of us we'd like = to post (if nothing else, the curious can see what the door to = Headspace looks like!). I, too, would really like to thank TMDR for being so gracious with = us. His father often described him as kind and I am in total = agreement with that assessment. And Thomas, I'll willingly pay for = any dry cleaning bills associated with your generosity in hugging me! Okay, I'll quit hogging the list and will try not to be too = long-winded when I describe the big evening but knowing me...Oh well, = your fingers can find the "D" key in nanoseconds these days, I'm sure! Fondly yours, Europa (who is really getting a kick out of the recent headlines!) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Oct 1997 19:45:04 -0800 From: thomas@headspace.com (Thomas Dolby Robertson) Subject: Alloy: Re: alloy-digest V2 #218 Dear Alloyites, I was most touched by your wonderful birthday wishes, and especially by the gang who showed up to my SF lecture last week and the reception afterwards, to present me with the Birthday Tape. It's really an amazing present, and has given me hours of enjoyment so far. I had no idea you lot were musically so..... um, diversely talented! The activities on this list are really quite astonishing. I hope the list's new post-Tap Room home turns out to be a happy one. I think it would be nice if it had a musical component using Beatnik, so if anyone has honed their chops yet, perhaps they should get with Paul and see how sound might play a part...... I can envision members having melodic "handles" which play to accompany their postings, and I might consider regularly contributing sections of my music as triggerable RMF files. - -- Thomas Dolby Robertson CEO, Headspace Inc. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Mood Ring, Headspace has released an all-digital online homage.... ****THE BEATNIK MOODMAKER !**** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V2 #219 ***************************
