ELECTRIX A few important things from the last few hundred(!?!) postings. Thankyou to Paul for being fair and honest in your dealings with Electrix. I never made it to the Tap Room were I believe Electrix used to hang out so I don't know how different that was to the mailing list. He certainly sparkled at first but then too many sparks makes a fire... >Some person once said: >ALWAYS REMEMBER: NO ONE CAN MAKE YOU FEEL BAD WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT. >electrix Not so, try to avoid hearing a "bad news" news report on the radio or tv! MUSIC I like the idea of music being equated to your star/birth sign. Is this an expansion of the "Music of the Spheres" idea? Looking at... bugger, I deleted the posting; but from what I remembered my birth note hovers somewhere between C-C#-Db. Could this be a limitation of the western 12 note scale? As a musician and a music lover I always consider that music is the most powerful of all the art forms. It can move to tears, lift to rejoicing, empower with strength and sooth to calm while completely ignoring cultural barriers. Also, when "doodling" on the piano or guitar I don't analyse were the new melody or chord arrangement has come from I just emjoy that magic moment of musical birth. Hey Lissu, What sort of music do you make? TMDR Thomas, I hope you're reading this... (and thanks to Miles for posting it) >To put it mildly, dear Mr. Dolby apparently feels somewhat slighted = >by his experiences in the music industry. He rebels and chafes at = >the machinery which returns, at best, only 10% to 15% of the proceeds = >of the sale of an artist's work to the artist, while simultaneously = >consuming the lion's share in its own greedy maw, and further, = >severely limits the consumer's access to the wealth of available = >product by offering only that music which the corporations deem a = safe >investment, or `likely to be highly profitable', while allowing = fresh, >creative, and imaginative talents to languish and remain = unheard. This piece made me very happy. Two musicians who I most admire feel the same way about the leviathan music industry - TMDR and Robert Fripp. Robert has gone the whole hog and started his own record label Discipline Global Mobile from which (and I'm quoting from a very good solo guitar album by Tony Geballe) the following stands proud... "The phonographic copyright in these performances is operated by DGM on behalf of the artist, with whom it resides, contrary to common practice in the record industry. Disipline accepts no reason for artists to give away the copyright interests in their work by virtue of a "common practice" which is out of tune with the time, was always questionable and is now indefensible." (I've got a few copies of the first DGM newsletter that contains an interview with Robert and his views on what is wrong with the industry. It makes eye opening reading. If anyone would like a copy email your address to me.) With Beatnik and DGM maybe we can see the thin edge of the wedge that will allow good, intelligent music more of the exposure it deserves! Hit D if you hate physics Airwaves being sound waves in air. This is all academic now that Electrix has been ousted, but anyway, I present it for the reader's delectation cos I think it's amazing: In Scientific American, Lawrence A. Crum of the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington, comments: "Our ear is so sensitive that as newborn babies, we can hear molecular displacements on the order of angstroms--about the diameter of an atom. Even though we lose this sensitivity with age, our adult ears can still detect molecular displacements on the order of nanometers." He's talking about how big a movement a sound wave causes as it travels through the particles of the air - how much each molecule moves from it's 'quiet' position. A nanometer is a thousandth of a millionth of a meter, an Angstrom is 10 times smaller, so we can detect pretty amazingly small movements! (Nowhere near small enough for Electrix's purposes, but hey...) Strange how the sound forms... in tiny movements... on my eardrum... It made me smile at work to see it :) And I swear I'm not kidding, and we weren't seeing things: on the night before Thomas' birthday, when Dave took me out for ice cream as consolation for not getting into Keith's party, we both saw a UFO - the description of the event is as follows: We saw one bright, red-tinged white light, about the brightness of Jupiter on a clear night, drifting quickly and silently, high across the southern sky from east to west. We couldn't see any structure around it but figured it must be a helicopter, though it wasn't moving like one or making any noise (seeming to drift gently, as if following an air current, but fairly quickly); after a while a second equally bright light came on, nestled in close to the first, identical in size and color. After another 30 seconds, a third light came on, forming a tight little triangle of identical bright lights. It continued floating along its path, then suddenly the whole thing disappeared - and reappeared again much further toward the west. It then seemed to gain very quickly in altitude, the light from it growing rapidly smaller, and then it just wasn't there anymore. We were freaked. It was moving off toward the southwest, the approx. direction of Thomas' house from Boston. COINCIDENCE?? What are some opinions of what this might have been? I doubt it was MIR. Hope Thomas and crew had some extra cake & ice cream handy.
