I feel like it's about growing past your own preconceived notions of yourself, other people's judgements of you, and things you thought you were or weren't good at, and creating your own life for yourself based around who you truly are, from this point forward. I like Thomas' songs about this kind of escape. "Cloudburst at Shingle Street" is another one about taking real control of one's life and potential. I LOVE this song. Both are obviously written by a man who has come to many self-realizations as his life has progressed from one point to the next. I couldn't help but notice Frank's recent comments, which have included: >Me gusta su sentido de humor. De todo eres mas normal que los dem=E1s. El >Fantasma >Estoy de acuerdo. El Franco and >Por favor, cerrar la boca. El Fantasma Hmm... I think this constitutes a nomination for Spanish as the official second language of Alloy! Of course, French would also have to be a contender, since TMDR himself speaks it fluently and sprinkles it into his songs every so often. (And we had a little moment of French on the list recently, as I recall.) However, none of this is keeping me from my own hidden agenda -- more Slovenian on Alloy! Think of it -- we probably all have an almost equal knowledge of the language. And it looks really cool. :-) Razumete? Dobro. This thought is not original - I stole it from another member of our little enclave (and I hope said person won't mind), and I thought it was so good that I thought I should throw it out to the group. Since we are a small, but loyal band of Dolby fans, don't you think it would be nice if someone from Headspace might send us little little blurbs when TMDR is going to make a public appearance at a lecture, etc., or when an interview is going to be published? Right now, we get information haphazardly, when an Alloy-ite happens to see something somewhere. While I think this info-sharing among us groundlings is a great thing, wouldn't it be nice to not have to hunt it down? (Particularly since there is such great interest in the group in being able to see and hear TMDR.) It wouldn't take much time at all to zap a three-liner to us, and it would give us some regular recognition that our continued support and interest is appreciated. Any thoughts? (It would be a nice thing to have on a web site, too - hint, hint - a little "Where's Dolby?" calendar noting lectures, etc...) Cheers, Melissa Melissa R. L DID Thomas windsurf even as a lad, when Windpower was recorded? boy, this makes my own interpretation of the song sound all freakish and psychological by comparison. Song interpretation is a lot like dream interpretation isn't it; subject to the inner workings of the interpreter. This could be grim! Though if I saw Thomas windsurfing, I DON"T think the word "continent" would spring to mind as a description of the event. To me "Windpower"'s always been a happy song about freedom (in a pretty general sense) to me, just the simple realization that you have the power to follow your own dreams, whatever they are (something many people I've met don't ever seem to realize). Of course, the windsurfing interpretation is a good one too, and makes a lot of sense, but I would imagine that one would windsurf to experience that happy little freedom high, so... Now "Cloudburst" and "The Flat Earth" have always been kind of environmentalist to me.. "we wrapped the rocks/we paved the beach.." and then "..state of shock at flick of switch..." (...although the music is made with synthesizers, affirming that technology in itself certainly isn't the problem, just the way it's applied. Loosely "Machines of Loving Grace" (classic '70s poem by Richard Brautigan) style, like some of my poetry).. let's forget all of the petty games the governments and corporations play with our lives and run back to the ocean in the rain and be free, and to hell with the consequences. Of course, I tend to get over-emotional about the ocean anyway (saw it the first time in six or so years, for two hours in oregon on a trip a few weeks ago! I was soo high..) Flat Earth is similar, but not as "dark", and a love song too... So there are my little interpretations. - -- E(lipse ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V2 #205 ***************************
