Hi y'all, This is probably a tad premature since a couple of not-so-minor details have yet to be nailed down but seeing as how a few Tap Room regulars are seriously jonesing I thought I should at least drop an indiscrete hint. Be careful what you wish for... After an enthusiastic go ahead from our Intrepid Hero, talks are underway with a few very talented individuals on this list with the view to them doing for the Tap Room what Alloy did for the dolby-list. This is not an 'if' but a 'when'. No vapourware, honest injun electrix :) More news as it comes to hand... stay well, Paul. Well, not in the literal sense of course - I doubt the guy's going to be doing coffee on Racecourse Road any time soon, but if you can overcome your embarrassment at being seen perusing a geek magazine, check out the August edition of Mac Home Journal. The cover page article is Musicians & Macs. Starts page 20, and guess what, the photo they used is cropped from the very same image we're looking at using for the shirts! Down side: Intro by the mag "Claim to fame: Recorded hit songs "She Blinded Me With Science" and "Hyperactive" in the eighties" ...ugh! Up side: He gets his own back. :) Onya Thomas! cheers, Paul. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 1997 07:34:53 -0400 (EDT) From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: There's an old saying... Melissa rarely posts here these days & I miss her :( Maybe she will visit the Tap Room once it's up & running? :( :( :( Robin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Sep 97 10:18:49 +1100 From: Paul Baily Subject: Re: Alloy: There's an old saying... >This is wonderful news!! Well, the FES tap room page will basically be changed to be a redirect page, i.e. people go to the same old URL but get bounced (gently!) to the new location. That way, hopefully we'll pick up a few of the FES visitors just checking in on the offchance. Or do you mean the 'room itself? In that case what I can say is one of the primary goals is to keep the essence of it the same so hopefully we can regain the same atmosphere. >Melissa rarely posts here these days & I miss her :( Maybe she will visit the >Tap Room once it's up & running? :( :( :( Yeah I miss you too Melissa, where've you got to!? cheers, Paul. The famous prophet Nostradamus seems to have predicted a certain recent tragedy: Nostradamus Century 2, Quatrain 28 "La penultieme du surnom de prophete Prendra Diane pour son jour et repos Loing vaguera par frenetique teste En deliverant un grand peuple d'impos." ("The last son of the man with the Prophet's name Will bring Diana to her day of rest. At a distance they wander in frenetic grief Delivering a great people from ruin.") After this, no more strange stuff I promise! Robin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 1997 19:35:24 -0700 From: electrix Subject: Re: Alloy: There's an old saying... No vapourware, honest injun electrix :) [With perked ears] Hmmmmm....no vapourware, huh? Well you have my credibility factor on Defcon One Yellow Alert. Of course, I am a tad curious has to the culprits encompassing the design team...consider we almost have the Global Market represented on the dolbyphile list. An International collaboration, perhaps? Who's good with French? You can also see it at http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/~bcohen/scientific.html for the insanely curious. It looks slightly more irregular/imperfect due to the extremely high resolution, but I think it'll be nice. Melissa, thanks for the city list; it also seems like I myself didn't contribute. If someone could add Tucson, Arizona I'd appreciate it greatly. I'm flying north tomorrow to Yellowstone. It's supposedly colder- than-usual this week, so we desert rats will get a welcome cooling off. All the grad students in my department (about 25) are going. We generally take 1 field trip per semester to look at geology, since most people who come into Planetary Science are astronomers or physicists, and try to model planetary surfaces with no knowledge of what real rocks look like. Me, I'm a geologist by training, so I get to be an "expert" on these trips, which is a nice ego boost :) This year we put a lot of work into the trip beforehand and got the department to fly us all up there, etc. We'll be looking at the Yellowstone calderas (huge collapsed volcanoes) and volcanic rocks, landslides, glacial features, thermal features, and as a bonus, we'll have a few REAL experts along to investigate life in extreme environments (such as sulfur hot springs) in order to speculate about life elsewhere, like Mars and Europa. So that's the deal. Life as a grad student here, Mary, isn't really so bad :) Too bad we're flying Delta and not Pan Am.
