I don't know who did it.. but I posted here maybe 2 years ago that I'd heard the same version on a station in Washington DC. It is really faithful to the TDR version, isn't it. (As faithful as a Manhattan Transfer-ish version could be...) I originally posted this info in response to someone else's having said that TDR "never" sold his songs. I too had a little bit of technical difficulty with this very simple recorded greeting. I got a new boombox earlier this summer, that recorded just fine, a simple little thing with internal microphones. I used it for a few weeks, and it worked well and I figured that as soon as I had a chance I'd put the birthday message thing on that... then I had the occasion to put the batteries in it. It short circuited something and melted the bottom of the case... (I hadn't even turned it on) We returned it, and have spent the past three weeks or so trying to replace it, something -always- went wrong.. the day before yesterday we -finally- found and purchased another little boombox, and today we got a microphone that will plug into it (since the salesman swore the first one we bought was a 3.5mm and would fit... and it wasn't, and it didn't) and just now I realized that the 90 minute chrome tape I thought was blank was one of my tapes of stories in Hawaiian. And -then- I found a blank, 90 minute CrO2 tape and spent about five seconds recording a short message... yeeeesh. But it's done, and I only hope it gets to Ian in time for me to have a copy of the finished album--I really want to hear what everyone here has done! -- E(lipse State of shock at flick of switch (from hell! ;) ) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Sep 1997 15:32:04 -0700 From: Eclipse Subject: Alloy: Another hello for Electrix.. I suppose TD has to keep himself in the public eyes...otherwise he would become a big fat zero. He even got a slight mention in Electronic Musician regarding the performance of electronic based bands. No matter where I am reading, the guy tends to pop up. The article is on page 16 of the July/August issue of Music and Computers. As you might have well guessed... there IS no "tasty instruments" in a computer based magazine only "tubes and wires." However, there is a profile shot of the man with his cute dimples, circa "The Gates...." less his beard. I would think that "tasty instrument" he posed with could have been some kinda pan-piper relic from the middle-age or something. It certainly provided for a contrast consider the kind of magazine it was --- hi-tech studio equipments. Yeah, the EQ article was very interesting. The man is certainly playing up the Beatnik image now a days. Not sure how to peg him anymore --- as the nerdy scientist, a Hi-tech Navigator, or a 60's Hawaiian dressed Beatnik. I guess it really doesn't matter. No matter what persona iteration he downs...we still lov' im. electrix ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Sep 1997 16:54:14 -0600 From: "Keith Stansell" Subject: Re: Alloy: Another tape in the mail... ...and another tale of a Rube Goldberg recording session. When I got ready to record my simple birthday greeting, I found that I could not find the simple microphone that will plug into my 8mm VCR which is connected to my stereo, and therefore my stereo with a cassette deck to record the greeting. As I was looking around in the still-unopened boxes of stuff from my recent (well, 3 months ago) move from Salt Lake to Denver I noticed the microphone on my computer. I thought, I'll just plug that mike into my stereo and record the message, and I'm done. I guess the computer uses a different mike than my stereo, because it did absolutely nothing in the stereo. What I ended up doing was plugging the mike back into my computer, patching the output of my computer into the VCR which is patched into the stereo which is connected to the tape deck and recording the message that way. As it turns out, I could make my greeting sound a bit better because my computer has some effects like reverb and such that added a little "punch" to the greeting - which is about 10 seconds long, but took much longer to record. I thought getting the outgoing message on my phone "just right" was tough. Well, anyway, the tape was put into the mail to Ian Friday morning, and I too hope in time to be included.
