September 1997 15:18 Precedence: bulk Well gang, my official involvement in Project B-day is now at an end. Corrections have been made to the J-card, they've been printed (I printed 40, which should be more than enough) and they've been sent to Ian along with my submission (Incidently Electrix, he recieved your submission and rather liked it. Infact he tells me he's quite impressed with the quality and uniqueness of all the submissions so far). Now, if you want to submit a song but didn't get on the dibbs list, go ahead and do so (but do it fast or you won't get on at all). You won't be on the J-card, but we'll include an addendum to credit those who submitted late (or you can mention in your birthday greeting which song you did). Well, nothing left for me to do now but wait. It's been a lot of fun putting this project together. I can't wait to see what the final product is like. Even though Thomas knows what his birthday present is, I'm sure that he'll still be pleasently suprised with the unique way in which his many fans interpret his works. Just get a 90 minute high-bias (CrO2) cassette tape, record "Happy Birthday, Thomas!" and send it in. Your copy of the album will be sent back to you if you provide your address & return postage. There are many of us that wanted to provide a song, but have no talent for music or instruments. This is the only way to get a copy rightfully -- you must contribute something! The only way to get a copy is to contribute to the album. If you can't contribute a song, then just record a short birthday greeting for the B-side (keep it under 2 minutes). Someting like, "Hi Thomas, this is Wank Winklemiere. I've been a big fan of yours ever since 1982 when I was in my proctologist's office getting a barium enima and I heard "She Blinded Me With Science" playing over the office sound system. At that moment I was a fan forever. Happy Birthday Thomas!" Send a birthday greeting message on a 90 minute chrome cassette to: IAN GIFFORD 551 COLBORNE STREET LONDON, ONTARIO CANDA, N6B-2T9 But you'd better hurry and send it in or you'll miss out. I love the birthday cake too, as well as the pointy party hats. Can't wait to see it for real! For those of you in a mad-dash search for a cassette: I looked all over for a "chrome" tape, then someone pointed out that I should be looking for a label which said "high bias" -- as opposed to "normal bias." The CrO2 is chromium dioxide right? (I'm just some dumb girl, what do I know about tape.) Not being able to find my microphone, I combed the house for my old hand-held GE tape recorder. Two days later I found it, and some batteries, then the damn thing wouldn't work. Last time I used it was probably chemistry class. It's sitting here in the trash can. So then the only recording device in my house was the camcorder... taped my birthday greeting onto an 8mm VHS tape, then played it while running the tape deck, which I dug out of storage. Is there a prize for Most Pathetically Convoluted Approach? Something as simple as "Happy Birthday You Old Coot" took me a week. What I'd really like to hear are the stories behind the songs you guys have recorded. I don't even want to think about what an impossible project it would have been for me... surely at least one of you took the long road in getting your song done. I believe I have heard something about Blinding and one other on a C/Net site. They were not snippets. They were complete renditions. Great. I don't know which site. I caught the URL by surprise and told the gang about it but that's about it. I am personally indebted to TD for his attention to my interest in Beatnik. That is his direction for the moment. Never fear. That is his direction. Have you listened to Algarve? It is awesome. It transports you to Spain (or Portugal) and you are wrapped in a cocoon of musical heaven. It completely envelops me. It is so haunting. It is Mozart reincarnated. I told TD that. I know he is appreciative. Man is that guy talented. And I am just getting to know him now. I hope the good Lord grants me many more years. And you are something else, too. It's a bit of a trick to do and I guess I've just been busy with the new job and all. I'd like to suggest you go to your local Blockbuster Music store and listen to the albums there. They will let you listen to any album in the store for free. That will be much better than poor sounding short snippets from the web page. Remember, the albums will be under "D" for Dolby, not "R" for Robertson :) Happy Listening!
