Intro _____ As you know, one of the priceless things about our Intrepid Hero is his vast palette of musical styles combined with an all-too-rare ability to eloquently paint delicate stories, pictures, or states of mind. Who could question this after listening to The Flat Earth, Screen Kiss, I Love You Goodbye, Budapest by Blimp or Weightless - the list goes on. That's not to say the gentleman is not phenomenally good at the fun, don't take life too seriously side either: a quick listen to Eastern Bloc, Hyperactive!, and May The Cube Be With You soon makes this gleefully clear. Look at it this way... ______________________ Another great thing is that TMDR's music challenges you to look at things in a different light than you normally would. He presents you with a unique spin on the usual, making it something to be appreciated. It's like showing someone from another country around your home town and having them marvel at things you've long taken for granted: in turn it prompts you to take a fresh look and appreciate it. Cut to the chase already Paul! ______________________________ Okay okay. Despite my rambling, I really don't like the sound of my own voice, honest! We've talked about what artists we'd like to see doing covers of Thomas' songs and you came up with some real goodies. Now let's turn it around. If you've heard the original version of "I Scare Myself" and compared it to Thomas' version you'll know that he's really good at adding dimension to songs that, well, might not shine so brightly in their original form? Okay, the question: What songs by other artists would you like to hear Thomas apply his own special touch to? It'll also help us 'visualise' it if you also give a song that TMDR's done in a style similar to how you'd imagine the cover being done, e.g. "I'd like to hear TMDR do a cover of Aerosmith's 'Walk this Way' like he did 'May the Cube Be With You'" Relax, I wouldn't really like to hear that, but you get the idea hopefully. then again, it'd be interesting to see what he did with that track. :) Here's a few I thought of that might help get the ball rolling: Crowded House's "Chocolate Cake" done in the Hot Sauce style complete with Spanish outburst by Gueysel Tejada! Cocoa Salsa Picante - hmm, sounds like munchies if you ask me. ;) Eurythmics' "Downtown Lights" (though I prefer Blue Nile's version) done in the I Love You Goodbye style. Talking Head's "Take Me to the River" done in the Airhead style, 2nd vote: done Pulp Culture style. Cindy Lauper's "True Colours" done in the My Brain Is Like A Sieve style - - turning this around a bit, I'd really like to hear TMDR and Cindy do Sieve as is anyway. Though I do love the woman's voice on the original cut. Duran Duran's "Save a Prayer" done Budapest by Blimp style. Depeche Mode's "Somebody" done any darned way he felt like doing it. Ladies and gentlemen, the floor is yours. Paul. [Your friends say he's a dumb blonde, but they don't know he dyes his hair.] ________________________________________________________________________ Paul Baily paulb@thehub.com.au Consulting SE/IT contractor http://www.thehub.com.au/~paulb Brisbane, Australia There is a spirit here that won't be broken. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Aug 1997 12:34:38 -0400 (EDT) From: MsSakamoto@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Covers In a message dated 97-08-18 07:52:33 EDT, paulb@thehub.com.au (Paul Baily) writes: > Okay, the question: What songs by other artists would you like to hear > Thomas apply his own special touch to? I think "That's What He Said" (written by Devo, but performed by The Smart Patrol) in a style like "The Mirror Song" would be highly entertaining. - --Suzanne-- ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V2 #163 ***************************
