"I don't see intermediaries disappearing, but the music industry is very threatened by this because it starts to bring into question what they're really there for." Hey, Been a while since I crawled out from under my rock, how are y'all? Just thought I'd add my two cents worth on a couple of things if I may. Firstly, sorry for not yet posting the results of the shirt survey some 22 of you kindly took the time to fill out. That's about a one in four response of all the subscribers here - well done! Looking through the threads of the past few days it seems that we're pretty much keen on the "Mr. Dolby rejects" thingo, but I'll summarise the results and post them in the next few days as time permits just in case you're curious. On that very topic, FWIW, I really like the "Mr. Dolby rejects" idea for the front and maybe some low key pointer to Alloy on the back. I know you wouldn't guess it by my usual style of talking too much but I'm a big fan of understatement (no, really I am!) Jeff's beaten me to the punch on the Alloy address. (On the ball as always Jeff!) If you're not subscribed to Alloy, sending to alloy@smoe.org will bounce directly to me and/or Jeff. I'd actually like to see a web page URL on there instead of an email address since it may be a little less intimidating to the 'off the street' enquirer, but I don't think it should point directly to my pages since I'd hate to see these shirts printed and me skip the state again (for work not legal reasons you understand :-) rendering the URL obsolete. I've had an idea though; I'm currently checking with Thomas whether it's feasible for me to write a redirection page and have his people put it on the FES website. That way we could have a static URL like say http://www.tdolby.com/alloy.html that points to wherever the Alloy pages are at the time. This is still subject to confirmation from the gentleman though so more news as it comes to hand. Re the Science! graphic, Stephen good buddy, it's partially my fault the graphic you have doesn't scale well, I had to 'dumb down' Barb's original image to speed up the load time. The original is 100dpi (a nice even multiple) and I'd hazard a guess that the photo was scanned at 50dpi. Still, if BC has an original then this is all moot. Also, it looks like we're still undecided on what text to put along the top of the image. Let's hear your opinion on it! I for one like the "Mr. Dolby rejects science..." headline, but that's just me. What do YOU think? Answer right here! And finally, just to throw a spanner in the works, I had an idea a few minutes ago for the back of the shirt. Along with the Alloy heading and URL, how about something similar to band tour t-shirts where they list all the venues, e.g. "Alloy tour '96/97:" and listing the cities/countries the you're all from? Doing the housekeeping on Alloy, I regularly look at the subscriber list - it's quite an impressive mix of locations! We could even slip in the odd location like Bhudapest, Croydon, and N'Awlins. :-) stay well, Paul. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 1997 15:06:30 +0100 From: Lem Bingley Subject: Re: Alloy: Catching up... And I don't know off-hand what the caption card in the Science video originally said, but as an editor I feel duty bound to point out that 'Mr Dolby' should not be written with a point as Barbara has it (Mr. Dolby), as 'Mr' is a contraction not an abbreviation. Nit-picking from hell, as Crackers would probably say. >how about something similar to band tour t-shirts where they list >all the venues, e.g. "Alloy tour '96/97:" and listing the >cities/countries the you're all from? This is a wonderful idea - and would make the shirt a true 'Alloy' object, as opposed to a Dolby object. I second that emotion. Tilson To: BlindCopyReceiver:; Date: Friday, July 25, 1997 4:29 AM Subject: Alloy: ALLOY t-shirt / RSVP Greetings Fellow ALLOY Member, A short time ago you expressed interest in owning your very own ALLOY t-shirt. We are essentially ready to go into production at this point. However, we need a little help from you. If you have missed what is going on, here's a recap. The project manager, Karen Bell of Great Silkie Artwear, has recommended using the "Mr. Dolby Rejects . . ." image, as suggested by Barbara A. Cohen. This can be done on Black, White, and as an alternate to White, Natural colored t-shirts. The shirts will be high quality 100% cotton, in either crew-neck or (ladies) scoop-neck styles. The cost for this will be $15.00 U$, or $18.50 for non-U$ funds ($3.50 exchange fee per transaction), and would include our choice of text on the back of the shirt. Shipping is additional. The issues yet to be resolved are mostly text related. I need your help deciding what we're going to say and where. There have been two main variations so far: one, from Brian Clayton, as follows. `"Mr. Dolby Rejects . . ." on the front and "ALLOY" on the back.' The other, from myself, as follows: Both "Mr. Dolby Rejects . . ." and "ALLOY" on the front with "ALLOY" justified above the picture, and "Fruit Juice Everywhere!" on the back as per my artwork submission (this was Melissa's original idea, and the initial impetus for the project, as I recall). I recall --- Here is Melissa Jordan on May 15 . . . "We should get our own "Secret Society" t-shirts that have some sort of funky image on the front and just the words "fruit juice everywhere" on the back." Perhaps you have your own suggestion about text and image? Please post it. Or, would you please choose one of the current suggestions so we can get a majority consensus? Two folks have come forward so far (Europa and Melissa) casting their lot with the fruit juice idea, and Ms. Sakamoto has seconded Brian's suggestion, but we're all willing to go with the majority. So --- speak up --- the time is NOW! Impatiently yours, Stephen /\/\iles P.S. I am posting this to each person who showed interest in the shirt, and to ALLOY in case I missed anyone. Let me know if I missed you. ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V2 #145 ***************************
