If not it's a Windows (and soon to be mac ) based program for personal chatting, by Mirabilis http://www.mirabilis.com What happens is that someone sends you an e-mail that invites you to download the software (1.5 meg for the beta version) and then you collect peoples "UIN numbers". Everytime you open the program and/or logon onto the internet (your choice) your name will appear in a box on someone else's ICQ program that says "Online". then all i'd have to do is click on your name and invite you to chat. It's very similar to "pow-wow" or IRC (it works in IRC mode for more than 5 chatters) and is realtime. I thought that this might be a neat alternative for those of you that miss the taproom and/or are online frequently just wishing you could chat to a fellow alloyer! Now, Don't worry about the "big brother" like sound of it! All parameters are user definable and there's even an invisible mode where you appear to be offline but you can still invite people to chat with you! It's really cool! Anyone who is interested can e-mail me with their personal address and I will send you one of these invitations> COOL? I've been moving into a new house, so I've kept quite busy. I've been lurking on this list for quite awhile, and sadly missed the questions for the bio's everyone posted awhile back. Anyway, I've tried to pick one Dolby song to cover. I haven't narrowed it down yet, but my final list of three is: Weightless One Of Our Submarines Cruel I really wanted to do "Sieve", "Cloudburst", and "Flying North" as well, but these have been taken! A good friend of mine plays trombone, so "Sieve" would have been great. As for the other trombone songs, I don't think I could do justice to "Hyperactive!", and "I Scare Myself" isn't really a Dolby song. My main instrument is bass, and the tunes with great fretless bass would be fun to do (Matthew Seligman's playing on Dolby's stuff is some of my favorite bass playing anywhere). For the great fretless tunes, I couldn't do "Mulu". I 'spose I could try "Screen Kiss", and "Cruel" has the great fretless line in the middle. I'd have my girlfriend sing the female part w/ me on "Cruel". However, if two Alloy-ers want to do some bi-coastal "Cruel" duet, go for it. I'll hopefully make up my mind soon, so I can get to recording! When I had the HMSS Pirate Twins crash land on Dhis-Ko I envisioned the story would come to an end soon (maybe another 5 chapters). I think what happened was that people had forgotten the objectives of our adventurers, as set out early in the story, and just kept adding on plot elements and devices. Plus I think some of the new contributors at the end of it hadn't read the previous chapters, or understood them. The whole point was to get Miss Sakamoto (the data storage device) plugged into the Moog Rogue (modified by the budapesti to be a super computer) and have that plugged into the Professor's Buick (the i/o interface). As well as gathering all 4 horns into place (two of which form the temporal rift blaster(tm) the other two serve some sort of purpose yet undisclosed). With all that accomplished our heros should be able to target and destroy the temporal rift that's threatening to cause a collision between our earth and the Flat Earth (which is infected with the dreaded Mulu Virus). Perhaps, once you've got it edited down to a point where it makes sense again, we could all write our own endings for the story and submit them. Make it sort of a little friendly competition. And if we find a place to archive the story permanently on-line (perhaps the new FES webpage), then all the alternate endings to the story could be kept there too. The reader can pick and choose the ending they like best. Something I thought might be fun would be to make a comic book of The Emeritus Professor story once it was concluded. Hi y'all, Emmy (Mary Ellen Spiegel) asked a while back how & why Alloy got it's name. Though I just feel like someone's said " Tell me about your childhood." I think I can answer this with some semblance of authority. :-) Why/How Alloy got it's name: The name Alloy is derived (okay it's a straight ripoff :-) from the Gate To The Mind's Eye video on which TMDR does the soundtrack. If you've not got it or seen it - GET IT! Anyway, the main character is an entity called Alloy who facilitates the ending of one universe, and the creation of a new one. Since Alloy was intended to be just a temporary measure between the time kspace closed dolby-list and the official FES list got off the ground, I thought the analogy fitted and the reference was obscure enough that only 'Dolbyphiles' would pick it. Hope I didn't do too badly. Others I'd thought of were: C452 (for the pirate radio feel), Caroline, Dolby-B (it was a play I nearly couldn't resist!), Europa, and a whole gaggle of others I'm far too embarrassed to say here. :-) How/Why Alloy got it's name: I was in the local supermarket at the time the name occurred to me. I think at the time, I was trying to remember whether I had enough coconut milk at home to make a green chicken curry. Go figure. :-) stay well, Paul. Frantics? Cool! I'm a -major- Rick Green fan...even managed to snag a few episodes of Prisoners of Gravity a couple years ago when our PBS station put it on for a summer run. Unfortunately, I'm having no luck finding Frantics recordings at any of my usual haunts, so all I have is some bits from old pirated Dr. Demento shows. Oh, and our local PBS station just picked up The New Red Green show, and I'm looking forward to that, as I saw an episode in California last summer and loved it. :) Robyn @ Robyn Moore @ http://www.alveus.com/kbrm/robyn.html @ You knew the job was dangerous when you took it. - S.C. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 1997 20:27:27 -0400 (EDT) From: crackers@hwcn.org Subject: Alloy: Project B-Day Dibbs.
