By Woz & Tia, what a voice... You have to hear some of his songs soon. Not only is he a fantastic composer, and an excellent singer, he's a master lyricist, the words to many of his songs could stand as poetry in their own right. Okay, I'm done being a drooling fan for the moment.... Oh, BTW, I personally don't think the Science bit was all that hot. It's certainly not a -bad- song, very catchy and dancable, but it irks me that of all the things he did he had to be famous for -that-. I think his best work was the entire "Astronauts and Heretics" album, though I listen to "Flat Earth" album more, 'cause if I have "Astronauts.." on, I have to actually stop and listen to it... which is very pleasant, but interrupts the myriad of things I have to get done! I would recomend TFE for your first listen though. That's okay! I am sure that there would be a varying degree of recording qualities! I am sure that even something done direct to a cassette deck would work fine! If you want me to do the final compiling, I'd be more than glad to do so and I am sure that we will get a fairly consistant sound as a final product! Did I mention that I also have access to dubbing equipment so anyone that wanted a cassette could just send it to me with the proper postage. I have been really excited since this morning when I read this idea! I mean, think about all the networking it would take to complete a project of this nature! I think crackers concept, for everyone in the group to be involved in something like this, as fans that is, is a birthday present in itself to TD. A friend asked me "would it be a surprise or does he read these messages?" and I replied "even if he does, the present is in the concept not the product and the surprise is in how each song is presented!" I already have some wacky ideas for "My brain is..." Here's what we've got so far.... Crackers: Nuvogue The Copse: Flying North Ian Gifford: My Brain Is Like A Sieve Also, unless anyone has any objections I'm perfectly fine with Ian taking on the monumental task of compiling the audio submissions for the project. It's a big job. You've got to choose the order in which the songs go onto the tape, and mix them together at consistant levels so you get a nice sound throughout the tape, plus you have to be careful not to colour the sound of the recordings too much incase you change the way the artist wanted the song to sound. Plus you've got to handle all these tapes comming in and going out. I'm glad Ian is so eager to volunteer. This is what bogged down the project when it was proposed in The Tap Room last year. We couldn't find a person with the time and resources to take on such a task. So now that it looks like we've got a person to take care of the audio compilation... we need someone to handle the J-Card. Just something printed on plain paper with a colour Inkjet will do nicely (I use my Inkjet for making J-Cards for my tapes). If you get too much artwork/poetry for a J-card maybe you could put them together as a little booklet to go with the cassette. It would be nice too, if you could supply Ian with enough J-Cards that the people who contribute to the project could get one with their tape too, but if not, just making a JPEG of the final J-Card available for download somewhere will be fine. Some other issues brought up... Don't fret too much over the recording quality of your cassette submission. As a musician on a shoe-string budget I know what it's like to not have all the gear you'd like for a project. The truth is, "a little hiss never hurt nobody". Just make it as clean a recording as you can. It's the creativity of your cover that counts more than the actual quality of the recording itself. Also don't feel intimidated because some of us are professional musicians and some of us arn't. That doesn't mean squat. Remember, this isn't a competition it's a birthday present. Does Thomas Dolby read this mailing list or not? Will the suprise be spoiled if he finds out about the gift? Well, it would be best if Thomas didn't find out about the tape until he opens his present. And if you do find out, Thomas, be a gentleman and act suprised. ;) But when it comes right down to it, it really doesn't matter in the grand scale of things wether the tape itself is a suprise or not. The real suprise will be how the tape is presented. It'll be in each of our interpretations of his work, it will be in the visual and literary artwork that his music has inspired. That will be where the big suprise of this gift will come from. Now, because of this, please don't submit matterial over the mailing list. When we find a person who will take on the task of creating the J-card or booklet, send your submissions directly to their E-mail box (or snail mail it to them if that is what they would preffer). It might also be a good idea not to discuss in too great a detail the song you're choosing to submit to the project. But be sure to call "dibbs" on a song. There's plenty of great Dolby matterial that each of us should have no problem finding a song to submit to the project. When should we get this done by? Well, first we should have someone confirm for a fact that Thomas's birthday is indeed in October (we don't want to look like dinks). If it is then I'd say get your cassettes off to Ian no later than the beginning of September. (Same goes for the J-card submissions). That gives us the summer to get the job finished. Are we going to get our asses sued off for violating copyright law? Technically there could be a case for violation of copyright law. But realistically I don't think there would be a problem. Nobody is selling anything. Infact the people that are taking part in the project are eating the cost of the tapes and the only money that will exchange hands will be that sent to cover the postage (it wouldn't be fair to expect Ian to pay the shipping). Plus only people involved in the project (and, of course the person the gift is intended for, Thomas Dolby) will be getting a copy of the tape, so it's not like it's being distributed to the general public to compete with Thomas's recordings. So you'd kind of have to be a real prick to sue someone whose only trying to give you a birthday present. And I just don't think that would be Thomas. Yes, but wouldn't it be the record companies that sue us, and not Thomas? And arn't record companies largely populated with pricks? Hmmmm... yes and yes. ;) An actual lawsuit is highly unlikely, the most that would likely happen if some record exec. got wind of this birthday project is that we'd be issued a "cease and desist" order. But if for any reason this makes you squeamish, well then don't participate. Like I said, we're not releasing an album, we're just making a birthday present for a musician we all admire. I don't see this causing any problems. As far as I know, this may well be the first time in history that a group of fans from all around the world will have worked together to create a project like this as a gift for an artist that has inspired them. I can think of no one more deserving to reap this benefit of the internet than Thomas Dolby. So ladies and gentlemen... start your tape recorders! And I did just as you suggested with the samples. I downloaded them. Well, well, do I like it? Yes. Strange beat at times, weird effects. I cannot follow the lyrics. I had Real Audio already installed. There were fade ins and fade outs. Is this the fault of network hubs? My Server has had complaints. A thing to do with bandwidth. And right now I am just mouthing words. I just don't understand the technology. If I were to describe the music in just one word I would say 'avant-garde'. I am not hep or hip to the latest. I am from a past generation. The voice seemed to be that of a Beatle. Was that Thomas singing? Would he come from England originally? This is my very first introduction to TD's work, other than the instrumentals on the Beatnik site. I really go for the Beatnik stuff. Can Algarve be bought? It is haunting. Suits my personality. It is not hectic. Very calming. Very soothing. The Real Audio is sort of frenzied and hectic. A little bit disturbing at times. I bet my blood pressure went up quite a few points. It is intriguing. I am not expressing myself well, as I am not accustomed to this type of music. It is sort of like the conversations I find in Alloy. I have trouble deciphering the expressions, the lingo. I absolutely am in the dark about the musical groups. In one paragraph (a rather long one from some contributor) I did not recognize the name of any of the groups. I am just not a part of the current scene. I am way out of it. But the fault lies with my ignorance. But to repeat, I did enjoy the samples. They are so different. My ear still is not attuned to them. Keith, please let me know about the fade-ins and fade-outs. Are they on purpose or did it not get done correctly in the downloading? I really started paying rapt attention when I got to 'I scare Myself'. These are good. I used the Web Site below. When I clicked on the download link I think it just started playing, perhaps from my cache? I am just guessing. So you did what I wanted you to do. I'm glad you enjoyed the music. I was going to suggest that it would be best for you all to send a c-90 and preferably a crO2-high bias tape. Normal bias will give you alot more noise and the fact that this has to be taken from whatever format you send me to the computer to the DAT to each subsequent Cassette is going to generate enough new noise as it is. If the length is less than 90 minutes than at least I would be able to get all songs on one side with a c-90 and that will make for ease of dubbing! Whoa -- I was starting to think I was the only fan of "Weird Al" and demented music in general on the list! (Does that make us Weird Al-loids?) Though alas, we don't get the Dr. Demento radio show in Atlanta, so I'm not that up on things in the humorous music world (what of the Barnes and Barnes body of work is notable besides "Fish Heads," and can it be obtained outside of science fiction conventions?) TMBG would also make my short list. Having seen both perform live, I would pay good money to see an accordion duet with Weird Al and TMBG's John Linnell. For that matter, I would also pay good money to see crackers play "Nuvogue" on accordion. I guess I'll just have to settle for hearing it on tape, unless you have plans to start a world tour, crackers :-) Cheers, Beth - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Beth Meyer School of Psychology Pager: +1-404-866-1362 Georgia Institute of Technology FAX: +1-404-894-8905 Atlanta, GA 30332-0170 bmeyer@psy.tfe.gatech.edu http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gt9020a/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jun 1997 12:54:26 -0400 (EDT) From: MsSakamoto@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: A birthday present for Mr. Dolby In a message dated 97-06-28 03:17:26 EDT, Stansell@usa.net (Keith Stansell) writes: > It's on October 13th I think. That just reminded me of something. I watch *way* too much television. One night, while flipping channels during a commercial when I was watching the Howard Stern show, I flipped it to MTV. Singled Out was on, so I watched while I waited for my program to come back on. The male contestant decided that he would eliminate the "intellectually challenged" girls (I can't remember how exactly they phrased it), and John the Piano Boy played a snippet of "Airhead". I was very impressed, and to this day, I haven't seen that episode rerun, so none of my friends around here believe me! - --Suzanne-- ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V2 #127 ***************************
