How about answering the same question for John Coltrane? My maiden name was Coltrain and I grew up with people constantly referring to Coltrane, yet the only album I own is the John Coltrane/Johnny Hartman one. (Born into a family in the southeastern US where Coltrain is a very common name, yet grew up mostly in the north where every kid thought it was the greatest make-fun-of name they'd ever heard). I've always meant to get to know John Coltrane better. > One last question: how was TD recruited for projects like doing > keyboards for Foriegner? (Hi, Clif.) Hi Lazlo, Weel spotted, man. You just can't leave the credits alone can you? It was fun working on those tracks. Frazier Chorus are way up there on my "sweetest people" list - right alongside Paddy, Mart and Wendy of Prefab Sprout, who are undoubtedly three of the most beautiful human beings it's ever been my pleasure to work with. I've been suprised by how many people here in the US know and love "Ray". It didn't go gold in the UK because of the ridiculous, snobby attitude of the British music press towards any white male who dares to use his lyrics to convey anything more intelligent than how much he loves his "baby". I can't really blame the press for their attitude, they are simply unconscious victims of the ultra competetive nature of English "society", but it's nonetheless very frustrating for an artist who has something to say and is prevented from saying it because the adolescent herd instincts of the British "journalists" have them all agreeing on who it's cool to like and who has to be vilified (anyone see a pattern here, TD fans?). Could have something to do with why there are so many ex-pat British musicians here in California - or is that the sunshine and the surf (???). Easy now . . . Not best acquainted with Herbie's jazz stuff, but for dat funky thang ya just gotta love "Headhunters", an album which pretty much defines the jazz-funk genre. I remember first hearing "Chameleon" from that album and spinning off into some very groovy jams with my trusty 808. That was just before I hooked up with Thomas for The Flat Earth, so there's definitely some of that 70's funk vibe in the drum programming. Some deep bass going on. "VSOP" is also pretty excellent, and there's a double album set of him working with four different jazz line-ups that's well worth combing the used bins for. I don't remember what it was called, but I remember James Levi's drumming beat for beat. . . .
