As you said, it helps distinguish the more important messages from the junk ;-) Now then, thoughts about anything? Yes, I have lots. One in particular about a radio station that broadcast in the Manchester area throughout February. KLCX 107.4 FM was broadcasting ONLY tracks from 'rock' albums during it's test transmissions in February. I discovered it by accident one day when scanning the airwaves and stuck with it to the end. They're applying for a full broadcast license and I REALLY hope they get it, because their output was right up my street, even if the DJs were a bit odd at times. They played progressive rock, jazz rock, folk rock, all kinds of rock, from the early days up to the latest releases, but unlike other so-called rock stations, they played no dance, rap, hip hop, or other stuff, so once tuned in I didn't have to skip to elsewhere to find something worthwhile to listen to. Each morning they had 'The Hour of Power' featuring one band or artist for a whole hour e.g. Jethro Tull and ZZ Top. Subscribers to the Jethro Tull mailing list have been complianing that they only ever hear one or two of the band's best known singles, and rarely at that. In one superb hour I heard a wide range of tracks, some of the popular ones but plenty of lesser known stuff as well. At other times I heard such wonderful artists as Procul Harum, Yes, Reef, Leonard Cohen, Mountain, The Rolling Stones and many, many more. Why is there such a lack of this type of station, when there are so many of the other types? I can scan right across the FM range and get around five rap/dance stations, two classical stations and one jazz station, not to mention several non-specialist stations, but there's nothing that concentrates on 'proper' rock? Do YOU suffer from a lack of such stations in YOUR part of the flatearth? As Jane said when she caught a glimpse of Tarzan's left testicle, "It's not right and it's not fair." I shall now climb down from my soapbox and get back to work, accompanied by my Walkman and a bit more Jethro Tull. The stations that I can pick up here where I live are playing stuff Depeche Mode's only US hit from the 80's on the "modern" rock station. It's either that or the "hot-hits" station, that plays the latest Celine Dion song 3 times an hour. On the brighter side, that same decade-challenged station played "The Flat Earth" once a few weeks ago. I couldn't believe it, I don't think I've ever heard it on the radio before. It was very cool. - --- Elaine Linstruth Palmdale, CA (USA) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 97 10:19:45 +1000 From: Paul Baily Subject: Re: Alloy: Collaboration >Thomas remains an enigma. You're right, he is nothing if not enigmatic. :-) I'm sure at least two or three people in our midst would know the answers to your questions (Thomas being one of them of course), methinks they're just having a touch of stage fright at the moment. Mary? Clif? You there? My thought for the day: Anyone have thoughts or interpretations on the inspiration/meaning behind Weightless? I seem to be listening to it an awful lot lately and can't put my finger on why it appeals so. stay well, Paul. __________________________________________________________________________ Paul Baily paulb@thehub.com.au Consulting SE/IT Mercenary http://www.thehub.com.au/~paulb Brisbane, Australia There is a spirit here that won't be broken ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V2 #36 **************************
