Jordan" Date: Tue, 27 Aug 1996 17:27:22 -0400 Subject: Alloy: Radio Caroline *ding ding!* Wow, it's been a desolate wasteland out here for a few days... I reckon everyone is either buried under end-of-fiscal-year hell or getting the last good rays of summer... I'm doing neither, but I am trapped in the office, waiting for a 14-page fax to go through to Vladivostok, so I thought I'd use up a little bandwidth today to say thanks to Brian for posting the funky story about Shingle Street. Highly apocryphal or not, it was really interesting. I'm always interested in the stories/people behind these tunes - I like seeing how they mesh or differ from the images in my head. I also like those moments of revelation, when I figure out (well, at least I think I figure out) what some Dolby songs are about. Back in 1986, when this sheltered midwestern girl went off to London for a year, I remember trying long and hard to find a decent radio station to listen to while I penned tedious papers about Hobbes, Machiavelli, and the Russian revolution. Finally, one night, I tuned into an area of quiet bandwidth and heard ship's bells. A clear, lovely female voice said, "Broadcasting from the North Atlantic, this is Radio Caroline 589." I remember a little switch flipping in my head, and I thought, "Wow! Caroline 452! Radio Silence!" So, can someone help me here? Have I been living under some sort of delusion for the past decade, or is Radio Silence indeed a reference to Radio Caroline? Regardless, Caroline kept me company for a year, spinning some pretty good tuneage - pirate radio seemed so much better than most London radio (for music, that is.) I get awfully nostalgic for Caroline late at night. Anyone know if she's still out there on the high seas, keeping the night owls company? Just curious, Melissa "And I listened to those kinda creepy oceanic weather reports, too" Jordan - ----------------- Melissa R.
