Someone earlier mentioned the slow speed because of the ammount of graphics used. Can I suggest that you look at http://www.iterated.co.uk/info for info on fractal image formatting. Their software gives a compression ratio of up to 49:1 and yet the quality of the image is still fantastic. The compression software is cheap and the netscape 2.0 plug-in is free. The great thing is you can zoom in too a picture 2 or 3 times and not loose too much to pixelation. It's something we're planning on introducing to our web site in the next few months. This way you could have many, many more pics without readers waiting too long. BTW - FIF is not a flash in the pan. MS use it in the latest version of Encarta. BTW - There is also Fractal video... My guess would be they wanted quality or maybe just consistency/symmetry with the pics, i.e. JPEG. > To those of you who wish to reply right away, telling me that I am >wrong, and you just finished listening to an Audio MPEG treat on your >PowerMac, hold your breath. Failing that, I believe there are one or two other 68k (or maybe fat) apps there that will play MPEG; point your WWW weapon of choice at: ..and search for MPEG. In some corp and govt sites they're in demand to this day - only a month ago I had one of my resellers calling me up and asking if I was willing to sell any 605's to them. I can well understand your frustration at finding only PowerPC software when you're running on a CISC Mac - I've only recently upgraded my home machine to a 6200/75 and still vividly remember hitting the 'PowerPC-only' apps barrier (for those of you out there running some variant of Windows, it's about as frustrating as ftping a huge file for your MegaWiz 5000 486 DX4/100 only to read in the docs that the file you've snarfed is for Alphas only.) Hope this helps, stay well, Paul. I understand that MPEG offers limited compression, which might have drawn you in, but us folks who are scanning/scamming the Web with MACINTOSH computers have no plug-in, add-on, or other software right now that can play Audio MPEG files. Thus we can NOT listen to the audio treats that somebody has put up, because they chose a stupid obscure audio file format. As a popular and usable alternative, I recommend the AIFC format, which stands for Audio Interchange Format, Compressed. It offers 6-to-1 compression, and can be read by Macs, Wintels, Sun, and SG machines. My second choice, if I were able to choose, would be AU format, also called U-Law format. It apparently originated on the ancient UNIX machines and occured when some of those glurps realized they had to do SOMETHING modern with their new multimedia UNIX boxes with speakers on the damn monitor. To those of you who wish to reply right away, telling me that I am wrong, and you just finished listening to an Audio MPEG treat on your PowerMac, hold your breath. The only software that will even attempt to play Audio MPEG on a Macintosh was developed for PowerMac only, leaving me out in the cold with my trusty Quadra 605. Kspace curators, please take note. Your audience became reduced by about 45% when you chose that awul Audio MPEG, and you might never get any of us to take a second look!!! Thanks for your feedback. In reply - I chose MPEG, because it sounds better than the rest by an order of magnitude. It's all going to be history in six months anyway, when PAC gets loose. >[snip] because they chose a stupid obscure audio file format . . . Obscure? Where you been, man? MPEG is all over the web, like asparagus fern up a rose bush. AU? Per-leeeze! I didn't choose to use the AU format for the very same reasons as I didn't choose to master The Gate to the Mind's Eye to wax cylinder. I see that Paul has kindly posted some resources for you to pick up a Mac MPEG player. FYI, the FES was built entirely on my 840AV and 8100/100 machines, so there is no way I would put anything on the site that wasn't available to Macintosh users. BTW, do you drink a lot of coffee? The reason there are no captions in the gallery , is that the larger jpeg's are currently displayed using the standard Netscape viewer, which allows only that ugly grey background, and disallows any text. I tried several times to get the board to vote me the time to make seperate html pages for each jpeg, without success. One of the reasons that I was so into the idea of captions, is that many of the snaps in the gallery are from my own collection, and I remember every detail of the times they were taken. I always have a camera with me, so I've got some crackers ( not you, Crackers ). Hopefully the powers that be at the FES will listen now that they know it's not just me being a perfectionist ( I am, though, I admit it ). >Where and when were these pictures taken? What a surprise to find so many messages in my in box after being out for a week. Here’s my story. My name is Keith Stansell (Stansell@sisna.com) AKA The 100’th subscriber to Alloy I was born in 1966, I grew up in St. Joseph, Louisiana. Our Parish (not county) sheriff really did have a harelip. I graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1990 with a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, and I now work for a small Corrosion Engineering company in Salt Lake City Utah. I was originally introduced to the music of TMDR by recording The Golden Age of Wireless from the “Thursday night Album Hour” on FM102 in Monroe Louisiana back in 83 or so. I kept that poor radio copy until my freshman year of college in ‘85 where I bought an “legal” copy of the cassette. I was surprised but not upset to find that the cassette I bought did not have “She Blinded me with Science” or “One of our Submarines” but did have a song called “The Wreck of the Fairchild” on it. It turns out it was an import, yet the price was the same. I later bought AAMB on tape, and then later replaced everything with CD. I still have the well worn import cassette and did not realize how rare it was until the recent Tommy Awards on the FES site. I now also own the Golden Age Laserdisc and I’m Retrospectical short of a full CD set. A little about where I live: Salt Lake City (9 blocks from the city center) Nearest Landmark: The Salt Lake City Mormon Temple (which I will never be able to enter because I’m not Mormon) Closest Famous Neighbor: Karl Malone (US Olympic Basketball Team and Louisiana Native) He must be a close neighbor because I once saw him in my local video rental store. As far as dream show goes, Silk Pajamas would have to be in there (complete with Cajun musicians). ------------------------------ From: "Dan Swan" Date: Wed, 10 Jul 96 21:56:11 MDT Subject: Re: Alloy: FES Website feedback (JPEG) clif brigden said: - -> - ->only that ugly grey background, and disallows any text.
