Well, I don't own it, but I sure did record it. The vocals are the work of Lea Thompson, who turned out to be a pretty good singer. All that luvvy theater training, I suppose. Any "economy" in the tuning department was aided by the trusty AMS 15-80, a high_end digital delay that, at the time, was the studio standard for tweaking vocals. We recorded two versions of "Don't Turn Away". One with Thomas singing and the other with Lea - I don't recall which one made it into the movie, Tom's I think, but you all should be able to tell the difference by now. Some trivia: the track was overdubbed and mixed at Stevie Wonder's "Wonderland" studios in Los Angeles on June 5th 1987 ( I remember it because it was my birthday). Mister Stevie Wonder honoured us by playing the wicked harmonica in the instrumental. We finished the mix and flew immediately to Mexico City to see England v Argentina in the quarter finals of the World Cup. Very exciting for us football crazy Englishmen. The game, as you no doubt recall, was won by Argentina, due to an appaling ruling by the referee, who allowed a blatant Maradonna handball to stand as their first goal. Reverse angle TV shots of the incident clearly show the foul, and in the background, Mr Dolby and myself, the normally mild-mannered doctor, hurling abuse at the celebrating Argentine players. All in the best possible taste, of course. Senor Maradonna's Karma finally visited him in 1993, when he was jailed then deported from Italy for "allegedly" importing cocaine while captain of Fiorentina. Thomas bought and donned a replica USSR team shirt outside the Azteca stadium, and was from then on was referred to as "The Commie" by the England fans that we travelled back to LA with. Here endeth the first lesson. Now what else do you want to know? Forward . . . bLiss btw, Ind - thanks for your mail, positive input is always a delight. Is >that you Drbliss on drums and Matthew Seligman on bass? Full marks for recognising Matthew, but a demerit for the drummer speculation. This gig was recorded just before my time, I came onboard three months later, a few weeks before we started recording The Flat Earth. The drummer is Andy something-or-other. Sorry, I can't remember his other name. He was a very popular session drummer around that time, and also a very nice guy, with enough of a sense of humour to not mind being seen on national TV hitting the tops of plexiglass lampshades with a kiddies toy hammer. The guitarist is Kevin Armstrong, the exceptionally talented, though sometimes "difficult", plank-spanker on "Wireless" and "Flat Earth". >3)Can anyone shed any light on the background of some of the non-album >tracks included in LW such as Jungle Life, Puppet Theatre and Samson and >Delilah? i.e. Are the featured in any obscure TMDR /TMDR-related release or >otherwise available? who wrote the latter two? etc. Samson and Deliliah was written by Kevin, and later recorded with his band "Bush Telegraph" (including myself on percussion/ computers) for EMI, who shelved the track, along with at least four other exceptional songs, for reasons know only to their A+R "department". Puppet Theatre was originally written by Thomas, Matthew and Kevin (also responsible as a team, for "Dissidents"). The track was written and produced for Whodini, under the name "Magic's Wand". Not quite Grandmaster Flash, but pretty funky for white boys.
