They were the 4th act to appear (of 10 total), and--like all the early acts--only had a short time to perform. On top of this, they followed an excellent mini-set by Buddy and Julie Miller, who were joined for two songs by festival headliner Emmylou Harris. (Buddy and Julie later backed Emmylou during her set.) Still, their set was very well recieved and they actually got a louder ovation than the Millers. Although the beginnings of songs they played were greeted by applause of recognition by some in the crowd, most of the audience was getting their first taste of Karen and Pete. Karen didn't talk as much as usual since they only had time for four songs as it was. She did mention this being the first indoor folk festival they'd played. Peter's playing impressed many, from talk I heard. They played: Nowhere To Go Here They Come Till My Heart On The River Road Lots of people were talking excitedly after their set, and they sold a bunch of cds, I'm sure. Emmylou Harris watched them perform from the wings. Earlier in the week an article previewing the festival in the Ann Arbor News had said this about Karen: "The Folk Festival historically discovers an artist on the cusp of greatness. Karen Savoca is this year's potentiality, with a voice veiled in sultry mystery and a provocative approach to songwriting. For all the subtle texture to her songs, Savoca's angelic voice and ingenious rhythms rival most of the new female songstresses, including Patty Griffin and last year's confused {festival headliner} Paula Cole." Karen and Peter return to Ann Arbor to play the Ark on March 20, and there should be a good crowd, with many new fans, there to greet them. Oh, FYI, the complete lineup for last night's festival was: Emmylou Harris, Altan, Kelly Joe Phelps, Moxy Fruvous, the Paperboys, Karen Savoca, Buddy and Julie Miller, Carrie Newcomer, the Raisin Pickers and mc Andy Breckman.
