Dustin Shelby - - http://www.neptin.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 22:04:50 -0400 From: Dustin Shelby Subject: [AlanisNews] More 5 1/2 Weeks Tour Information Previously unreleased tracks from Alanis Morissette and Tori Amos will be offered via the Internet in conjunction with a promotion of their summer tour sponsored by controversial digital music provider MP3.com and retailer Best Buy. In addition, Best Buy may do Webcasts from various stops on the nationwide tour and allow fans to watch the event at Best Buy sites. The greatly anticipated 5 1/2 Weeks tour and its unique promotional deal was officially unveiled Tuesday at a news conference in Los Angeles attended by MP3.com founder Michael Robertson and president and chief operating officer Robin Richards; partners Scott Welch and Charles Roven of Atlas/Third Rail, Morissette's management company; Amos' manager Arthur Spivak; Best Buy senior vp merchandising Gary Arnold; and CAA's Rob Light. With this deal, Morissette and Amos are taking a leap that some see as a defining moment in music history, with distribution of music online more than ever shaking up the traditional five major music companies Don't expect any catfighting this August when Alanis Morissette and Tori Amos hit the road together. According to Scott Welch, Morissette's manager at Atlas/Third Rail Entertainment, although it will be his client who will close the co-headlining affair nightly, both singers will be on equal footing. "Usually in a show with an opening act situation, they use the same lights and same production," Welch explained in a press conference regarding the tour on Tuesday (April 27) at Hotel Nikko in Beverly Hills, Calif. "We're taking it a step further. Tori is going to have her own stage set. So when you see her set, it's going to look like you've gone to a Tori show. It's going to have her signature on it, and the same with Alanis." Welch went on to explain that both singers will perform a full concert set and have their own production, lights, and overall stage design. In essence, similar to jaunts in recent years by Billy Joel and Elton John, fans will be getting two full concerts plus an opening act each night. Opening acts for the 5 1/2 Weeks Tour will be chosen by Morissette and Amos from a list of some 10,000 MP3.com artists -- that is, artists who have made their songs available for streaming or downloading on MP3.com, a leader in emerging music/Internet technologies. MP3.com, along with Best Buy, will sponsor the 5 1/2 Weeks Tour and make available to the public previously unreleased tracks from both artists leading up to the tour's kickoff in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. on Aug. 18. Arthur Spivak, Amos' manager at Spivak Entertainment, knows juggling the intimate stage settings of two high-profile acts will be a challenge. "It's not as easy as one would think to move a grand piano [on and off a stage]," he said. "There are a lot of logistics involved." The "5 1/2 Weeks Tour"--featuring each artist doing full-length sets with their regular stage production--begins August 18 in Ft. At a press conference held recently in Los Angeles, the two artists' managers (Scott Welch at Atlas/Third Rail for ALANIS, Arthur Spivak of Spivak Ent. for TORI), their booking agent (CAA's Rob Light), MP3.COM and Best Buy announced the unprecedented alliance. MP3.COM CEO Michael Robertson said, "The potential here is enormous and we've got to seize this opportunity. But the burden's on us to illustrate that this is a good thing for fans, it's a good thing for artists, it's a good thing for CD sales and it's a good thing for the concert ticket sales. We think the best thing to do is have everyone contribute to the site, so the artists can have creative control." Scott Welch noted, "All of us are in uncharted territory. We're all trying to find ways to improve the relationships artists have with their fans." Opening acts for each city on the "5 1/2 Weeks Tour" will be chosen by ALANIS and TORI from artists on the MP3.COM website. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 19:01:51 -0400 From: Dustin Shelby Subject: [AlanisNews] Fwd: Neptin.com = Down Sorry for the off-topic post, but this concerns you guys. This Friday (June 25), America Online will be the only place where fan can check out the worldwide debut of ALANIS' self-directed video for "So Pure," the new single from her SUPPOSED FORMER INFATUATION JUNKIE album (Maverick Recording Co.). Expected to be seen by approximately 18 million viewers, the video will launch in various speeds of RealAudio at 5:00 AM ET and will be available on the home page for 24 hours -- and from the home page, entertainment page and music page throughout the weekend. Via AOL, subscribers will access the space with Keyword: ALANIS. On Monday (June 28), the promotion will also be made available on the Internet on the music page of America Online's website (www.aol.com) and its entertainment partner website, ASYLUM.COM (www.asylum.com/alanis) for the entire week. The promotion on all sites will conclude Tuesday, July 6. Meanwhile, AOL is already teasing the premiere with seven slides from the video within their entertainment space and music space of AOL. With the "So Pure" video, ALANIS extends the melodic buoyancy and dance rhythms of the song, which hits radio June 29. Shot during two days in Toronto, the strikingly choreographed video is a joyous celebration of dance. Throughout the video, ALANIS and actor Dash Mihok--who has appeared in such films as Romeo & Juliet and The Thin Red Line--are seen as a couple who seamlessly dance their way through the eras, from the `40s through the `90s. Decked out in period clothing amid an elaborate array of settings, they incorporate such moves as swing, tap, Latin, modern dance and free-style. The video was choreographed by Kevin O'Day, who's danced with companies such as the Joffrey Ballet and Twyla Tharp and created choreography for dance companies worldwide. "Over the last year," says ALANIS, "I'd become enamored with the dancing styles of the `40s in particular and intrigued by the evolution of dancing throughout the last five decades and the spirit and different kinds of attitudes that fuel them. When it came time to create this video, there was no question that there would be dancing in it and that these different eras needed to be referenced!" Currently, ALANIS is overseas on her world "The Junkie Tour" and is set for "Woodstock `99" which takes place July 23-25 in Rome, New York. The singer, songwriter and musician will then embark on the "5-1/2 Weeks" tour with Tori Amos August 18, kicking off in Ft. Lauderdale at the NCR Arena.
