So far there have been 1 reply onlist but I got five private replies. However, all five private replies were written in context that made it seem they were intended for the list (i.e. "hi everyone" etc). I am not sure how the other smoe.org lists you are on are configured, but this list is configured so that if you are on what we call "loose mail", when you hit "reply" your reply will be sent to the author of the post you are replying to, NOT the list. To reply to the list you either have to hit "reply-all" or type in 50s60s70s@smoe.org in the To: thing-a-ma-bob. If you are on the digest version of this list, hitting reply WILL set up your reply to send it to the list. BUT I would imagine that there are already dozens of "Greatest Hits" offerings out there, and that a lot of Elvis fans already have some if not all of them. I'd be real surprised if this hit as big as The Beatles "1" did. And I'm not the biggest Elvis fan either, but there's no denying his charisma and the fact that he was one of the first to meld country/r&b and sell it to a white audience. His impact shouldn't be underestimated, even though he sort of turned into self-parody there at the end. Favorite Elvis song, "Jailhouse Rock", followed closely by "Heartbreak Hotel" Bob NP: Miles Davis, "Flamenco Sketches" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 08:28:57 EST From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: R&R: Desperately Seeking Martin Arthur Wood over in our Mother Country was kind enough to send me the Electra re-release of the Fred Neil and Vince Martin recording, "Tear Down The Walls." It also includes an early Fred Neil album on the CD as well. These two were a great duo and long predate Simon & Garfunkel. Neil, as some may recall, wrote "Everybody's Talkn'" that was made famous by Nilsson in the "Midnight Cowboy" movie. Sadly, this song is on neither CD. Neither is Martin's stunning, "If The Jasmine Don't Get You, The Baybreeze Will" that was written as an ode of sorts to Coconut Grove in South Florida. But still it's good hearing these old bluesy tunes with a young John Sebastian blowing harp and Felix Pappalardi producing (of Young Rascals fame, remember them?) Later Sebastian would cover a Neil tune, "Another Side To This Life" on a Lovin Spoonful record, as well as penning his own tribute to Coconut Grove called, aptly enough, "In Coconut Grove." Speaking of Vince Martin, anyone on this list have any idea where he is and how I might get in touch with him? Rumor has it he's back in New York, possibly living in Brooklyn but I don't seem to be able to get a number or email address. Last I heard he played the South Florida Folk Fest a couple of years ago. Great songwriter--I learned alot from him personally during my college years. Would love to find him again. This will also avoid having to get the posts twice when you're the author. And to interject some R&R content, what do y'all think of that Spin "Best Band" list? I don't have it in front of me, but some of the entries were pretty shaky. This will also avoid having to get the posts twice >when you're the author. Yes, but that presents other problems. Namely, replies that should be sent privately being sent to all list members...I've seen that a lot on many lists. I've weighed both options and consider the "reply to author" method the overall best way to go, although other list managers prefer the opposite, which is fine. Bottom line...the subscribers just need to be aware of how and when to send replies to whom. (hope that came out right :-) and have the presence of mind to be aware of the addresses in your "To:" field before clicking send. Sandy Stewart, a sometime-collaborator with Stevie Nicks, released an album circa 1987 as part of a group called "Blue Yonder". Sadly, this wonderful album made its way, rather quickly, to the "cut-out" bins. I have heard a rumor that the Blue Yonder album was released on CD as well, and would LOVE to get my hands on a copy. Anybody seen one floating around, or have any suggestions about where I might look? I've been stalking Ebay for it, unsuccessfully, for a while now. Thanks, Scott p.s. My favorite sound this week is the background vocalists' "Whoo" from "I Am The Walrus", as in "I AM THE EGGMAN" "(Whoo)" "THEY ARE THE EGGMEN" "(Whoo)" "I AM THE WALRUS! GOO GOO GOO JOOB!" It was released simultaneously with the 2-disc "Top 10 Hits" collection. Both were released in 1987. ************* "A fellow will remember a lot of things you wouldn't think he'd remember. You take me. One day, back in 1896, I was crossing over to Jersey on the ferry, and as we pulled out, there was another ferry pulling in, and on it there was a girl waiting to get off. A white dress she had on. She was carrying a white parasol. I only saw her for one second. She didn't see me at all, but I'll bet a month hasn't gone by since that I haven't thought of that girl." - --Bernstein (Everett Sloane) in "Citizen Kane" (1941) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2002 09:44:11 -0800 From: "WorldBroadcastTelevision.com" Subject: R&R: Re: 50s60s70s-digest V1 #2 Elvis was my favorite.
