WPIX started their "Elvis to Elvis" format late in 1978 and stayed that way until March 1980. The dropping of the format was particularly upsetting to PIX fans like me (it actually affected my grades and resulted in me joining my college radio station). Weekends on PIX were special. There was the "PIX Penthouse Party," Mark Simone's Sunday morning "Simone Phone," Ralph M. Newman's "Old Rock 'n' Roll Show" and Jane Hamburger's "New Rock 'n' Roll Show." On Sunday nights Dan Neer and John Ogle hosted "Radio Radio," an incredibly fun three hours during which artists would stop by and guest DJ. One show I remember had guest jocks Debbie Harry, Chris Stein and Clem Burke being joined later in the program by David Johansen. Other guests were Ric Ocasek, Cindy Bullens, Rockpile, Squeeze, the Police, the Ramones, etc. On one show Genya Ravan mixed a track on the air. I wish I could track down some "Radio Radio" tapes. When management dropped the format they locked the DJ's out of the building. So Neer and Ogle were unable to retrieve any of the tapes. If anyone has any, I am interested. The new format wound up being "love songs," which didn't last long either. PIX was pretty famous for changing formats. They had previously dropped disco before disco took off. PIX apparently had them nervous over at NEW. At one point, Scott Muni instituted a month-long boycott of A&M artists because of a live concert (Buzzcocks, I believe) that was broadcast on PIX. My favorite PIX jock was Hamburger. I've heard she was in pretty bad health in recent years. Does anyone know how she's doing?
